Alexandra Eala Reaches U.S. Open Third Round With Win Over Oleksandra Oliynykova

Alexandra Eala of the Philippines advanced to the third round of the U.S. Open on September 3, defeating Ukraine’s Oleksandra Oliynykova 6-1, 6-4 at Flushing Meadows. According to Reuters reporting, the 21-year-old left-hander secured the victory in just over an hour at Louis Armstrong Stadium, maintaining momentum in front of a supportive crowd.

Match Breakdown and Key Statistics

According to Reuters, Eala capitalized on a strong start by winning the first four games of the opening set, recording 11 winners while limiting her opponent’s output. The second set proved more competitive as the players traded breaks, but Eala broke from the baseline in the seventh game and closed out the match with an unreturnable serve.

The victory marks a reversal from earlier in the season. According to Reuters, Oliynykova defeated Eala in Strasbourg earlier this year, but Eala adjusted her approach for the New York rematch. “My patience and the consistency of my focus – I think that was the key to winning the match today,” Eala said, as reported by Reuters.

Tournament Context and Fan Support

Eala enters the third round following a career-breakthrough tournament victory in Washington, D.C., last month, according to Reuters. Playing in front of fans displaying the flag of the Philippines and signs in Tagalog, she acknowledged the significance of the backing.

“I think we all represent something. I’m proud of what I represent,” Eala said, according to Reuters.

Ranked 18th in the world upon arriving at Flushing Meadows—up from 50th at the end of 2025—Eala noted that her previous Grand Slam experiences have contributed to her on-court maturity. According to Reuters, she reached the fourth round at Wimbledon earlier this summer for her deepest major run to date.

“I do feel like a more well-rounded player now and more mature,” Eala told reporters, according to Reuters. “I guess with time comes maturity and more intelligent. I think I just have more knowledge with experience in terms of tennis and competing at the very high level and knowledge of what I’m capable of and belief in myself.”

Next Opponent

With the second-round win secured, Eala advances to face either American Iva Jovic or British player Francesca Jones in the third round, according to Reuters.
