Digital state IDs in Google Wallet are available across a growing number of U.S. states and territories, allowing Android users to store verifiable driver’s licenses and identification cards on their smartphones, according to reporting from 9to5Google.

Participating States and Territories Supporting Google Wallet IDs

As of June 2025, Android users can add state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards to Google Wallet in 11 U.S. jurisdictions, according to data compiled by The Hoops News. The supported locations include Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, Puerto Rico, and West Virginia. Each participating state Department of Motor Vehicles or equivalent issuing authority collaborates directly with Google to deploy the necessary technical framework, ensuring credentials meet legal standards equivalent to physical documents.

Security Protocols and Enrollment Requirements

To add a digital credential to Google Wallet, users must complete a multi-step verification process outlined by issuing authorities. According to The Hoops News, enrollment requires scanning the physical ID card, recording and submitting a selfie video for identity confirmation, and routing the application directly to the state’s issuing authority for approval. Security measures protecting the stored credentials include end-to-end data encryption, mandatory device screen lock authentication, and remote data-wipe capabilities through Android’s Find My Device ecosystem if a phone is lost or stolen.

Acceptance at Transportation Security Administration Checkpoints

State-issued digital IDs are currently accepted at select Transportation Security Administration (TSA) airport security checkpoints across the United States. Despite this integration, transportation authorities and state agencies advise travelers and residents to continue carrying their physical driver’s licenses or ID cards, because digital credentials lack universal acceptance across all commercial and governmental verification points.

Technical Standards and Interoperability

The implementation of mobile identification documents in Android devices aligns with international benchmarks such as ISO 18013-5, the global standard governing mobile driving licenses (mDLs).
