A measles outbreak centered in Lubbock, Texas, during the spring of 2025 prompted urgent public health interventions after hitting multiple young children and an adult, according to data published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Texas Department of State Health Services. According to a June 2026 report in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, the United States recorded its highest number of measles cases in 2025 since measles elimination was declared in 2000, driven in part by local transmission events like the one in Lubbock.

Lubbock Child Care Facility Transmission Timeline

The Lubbock outbreak began on March 21, 2025, when Lubbock Public Health received a report of a three-year-old child care attendee exhibiting classic symptoms of the virus, including fever, rash, cough, coryza, conjunctivitis, otitis media, and diarrhea. According to the MMWR study authored by Anh N Ly and colleagues, real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) testing confirmed the child had measles. Six additional children from the same child care facility and the grandfather of one of the attendees subsequently tested positive via RT-PCR. Public health investigations confirmed that none of the patients had reported any recent travel history, indicating local community spread.

Public Health Response and Containment Measures

Lubbock Public Health officials intervened immediately by contacting the caregivers of pediatric patients to conduct thorough case investigations. According to the CDC report, officials provided the child care facility with strict guidance regarding home isolation, vaccination, and diagnostic testing. The facility responded by implementing containment measures, such as separating children who were not yet eligible for the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine, minimizing the use of shared spaces, and actively monitoring remaining attendees for emerging symptoms.

Texas DSHS Vaccination Recommendations

To curb the broader spread of the virus, the Texas Department of State Health Services issued updated measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine guidelines for individuals living in or visiting designated outbreak zones. According to DSHS directives, infants aged six to 11 months should immediately receive an early dose of the MMR vaccine. Preschool-aged children between one and four years old who have received only one prior dose must be administered a second dose. Furthermore, children at least one year old with no documented vaccination history require two doses given at least 28 days apart. For adults, DSHS recommends a second dose for those with only one prior shot, while unvaccinated adults must receive a two-dose series separated by a 28-day interval.

Postexposure Prophylaxis and Prevention

State health authorities emphasize that vaccination remains the best protection against measles transmission. According to DSHS guidelines, individuals exposed to the virus—regardless of their county of residence—should be offered the MMR vaccine as postexposure prophylaxis in accordance with established Centers for Disease Control and Prevention protocols. Public health agencies continue to monitor affected regions across Texas, adjusting designated outbreak areas dynamically to support local containment efforts and protect vulnerable populations.
