Xbox Disc-to-Digital Program Launches Without Ubisoft and Square Enix

Microsoft is rolling out a new Xbox disc-to-digital feature that lets players convert physical game discs into digital licenses, according to details announced by the company and reported by The Verge in August.

How the Xbox Disc-to-Digital Program Works

The system allows owners of Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles to claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported physical disc into their machine and launching the game, according to Jason Ronald, VP of next generation at Xbox, as reported by The Verge. Once verified, the digital version unlocks for use on the console without needing the physical disc in the drive, though the license remains tied to that specific physical disc if swapped with a friend.

Microsoft scheduled initial testing for Xbox Insider participants starting August 31st, ahead of a broader public rollout for Xbox One and Xbox Series X hardware. Converted titles that support Xbox Play Anywhere can also run on PC, or stream via Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Major Publishers Opt Out of Launch Lineup

Despite Microsoft launching the initiative with thousands of compatible games, notable gaps remain in the catalog.

Impacted titles span major franchises, including Ubisoft’s Far Cry 4, Far Cry 5, Watch Dogs Legion, and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, alongside Square Enix entries like Rise of the Tomb Raider, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and the Just Cause series. Industry reports indicate that additional publishers such as Sega, Atlus, and Bandai Namco are also holding back participation at launch.

Publisher Hesitation and Subscription Strategy Concerns

Neither Ubisoft nor Square Enix has issued an official statement explaining their absence from the program.

Microsoft maintains that the feature will expand over time. Ronald noted that while not every title is available on day one, the company intends to add more publishers and games as the ecosystem evolves toward future hardware generations.
