Central Command. The military action on Tuesday followed two days of ballistic missile attacks by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards targeting an American Navy warship patrolling regional waters. According to U.S. Central Command, the warship successfully evaded the incoming missiles without sustaining damage or injuring any personnel.

Strait of Hormuz Shipping Disruptions and Oil Prices

The maritime clashes have severely disrupted traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical energy corridor through which approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil passed prior to the conflict. Gulf News reported that Murban crude reached $110.8 per barrel, marking a 3.75% increase in early trading. Insurers, shipowners, and commercial crews continue to reassess regional transit risks, leading to a dramatic slowdown in commercial shipping traffic.

Military Targets and Evacuation Protocols

U.S. Central Command identified the five vessels destroyed on Tuesday as the M/T Kaviz, M/T Charminar, M/T Horizon 1, and M/T Riesco in the Gulf of Oman, alongside the M/T Derya near Kharg Island. Iranian state television confirmed the strikes near the southern port of Jask and Kharg Island. According to both military and state media reports, the crews of all five targeted vessels received advance warnings to abandon ship before the munitions struck, and local reports noted that crews were successfully evacuated.

U.S. Retaliation and Sanctions Strategy

Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated during a trip to Colombia that Washington will not allow ongoing Iranian attacks against naval assets to go unanswered. “Iran continues to try to hit U.S. naval ships. And for every time they do that or try to do that, they’re going to lose tankers,” Rubio told reporters. Simultaneously, the Trump administration imposed economic sanctions on more than two dozen commercial and private airlines as well as foreign cargo service providers within Iran’s aviation sector.

Regional Impact and Jordan Missile Interception

Following the American maritime strikes, Iran launched a barrage of ballistic missiles toward U.S. targets located in Jordan, according to Iranian state-run media. Jordan’s military reported that its air defense systems successfully intercepted 18 ballistic missiles over its territory, while two additional missiles landed in uninhabited areas with no reported casualties. Danny Citrinowicz, an Iran expert at Israel’s Institute for National Security Studies, warned on social media that escalating back-and-forth strikes increase economic and security risks. “There is no kinetic solution to the Strait of Hormuz problem,” Citrinowicz wrote, noting that escalating military actions bring Washington and Tehran closer to an unmanageable crisis.
