Hyundai Motor Group has signed a cooperation agreement with the African Development Bank (AfDB) to explore joint business opportunities spanning clean energy transitions, infrastructure development, and electric vehicle supply chains across Africa, according to corporate announcements released in September 2026.

The Letter of Intent (LOI) was executed on September 8, 2026, at Hyundai Motor Group’s headquarters in Yangjae-dong, Seoul. The partnership pairs Hyundai Motor Group’s industrial expertise in mobility, energy, and infrastructure with the AfDB’s capabilities in development finance, investment attraction, and project structuring.

Six Strategic Pillars of the Hyundai-AfDB Partnership

According to official disclosures, the agreement outlines cooperation across six distinct sectors intended to foster sustainable growth in African markets. The scope includes advancing green hydrogen and other renewable energy solutions, establishing sustainable mobility solutions, and developing transportation and logistics infrastructure such as roads, railways, and ports.

Additional focus areas involve building electric vehicle (EV) value chains utilizing critical minerals, strengthening local manufacturing capabilities, and running talent development programs tailored to future mobility and energy sectors. To secure project viability, Hyundai Motor Group and the AfDB announced plans to discuss a “Blended Finance Package,” combining public policy financing with private capital to mitigate investment risks for large-scale infrastructure projects.

Institutional Background and Previous Research Milestones

The agreement builds upon a series of preparatory initiatives undertaken by Hyundai Motor Group to analyze African industrial shifts.

In April 2026, the automaker and SOAS CSST released joint research findings evaluating the growth potential and industrial restructuring challenges of Africa's mobility sector, setting the stage for the formal agreement with the AfDB.

Leadership Perspectives on Long-Term Growth

Kevin Chika Urama, Senior Economist and Deputy President at the African Development Bank, noted that the automaker’s accumulated experience, technological development, and future vision closely align with the AfDB’s objective to translate Africa’s economic potential into shared prosperity.
