Irish adventurer Eamonn Keaveney has completed a 6,000-kilometer barefoot journey from Istanbul, Turkey, to the headland of An Dún Mór in County Kerry. The 33-year-old civil service worker walked for 340 days across 10 countries to attempt a new Guinness World Record for the longest barefoot walk, raising funds for youth mental health organization Jigsaw and Friends of the Earth.

The Route Across Europe and Physical Toll

Keaveney began his trek on March 4 of the previous year in Istanbul. His route crossed Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Austria, Germany, France, England, Wales, and Ireland. The physical demands of traveling without footwear created significant hurdles throughout the nearly year-long expedition.

Severe summer heat in Hungary and poor road surfaces with sharp gravel tested his endurance. He also battled a severe foot infection caused by a thorn that required antibiotic treatment.

Logistics and Public Support Along the Way

For shelter and sustenance, Keaveney relied heavily on public hospitality. He camped outdoors until the weather turned cold in Germany, after which he mixed couch-surfing with budget accommodations. “People have been wonderful giving me a bed in their homes and welcoming a total stranger,” he stated.

His girlfriend, Ellie, accompanied him for the first six months of the trek, walking alongside him as far as Geneva. After reaching Geneva, Keaveney continued the remainder of the journey alone.

Prior Expeditions and Next Steps

The 6,000-kilometer trek builds on Keaveney’s past endurance challenges. He previously climbed several Irish mountains—including Croagh Patrick—without shoes and completed a 2,000-kilometer barefoot walk around Ireland in 2016. To undertake his latest expedition, he took a career break from his civil service job.

Having reached the most westerly point in Europe at An Dún Mór, Keaveney’s journey is not yet finished. He plans to continue walking barefoot from West Kerry back to his hometown of Claremorris in County Mayo, adding another 500 kilometers to his total distance.
