Jordanian military forces engaged and destroyed 18 out of 20 ballistic missiles fired from Iran toward the kingdom, according to statements reported by Stars and Stripes. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for the barrage, stating through the state-run IRNA news agency that the operation targeted the Al-Azraq Air Base as part of a retaliatory campaign.

Social media footage captured air defense interceptors engaging the incoming barrage over Jordanian airspace, though Stars and Stripes could not independently verify the video evidence. Fox News reported that cluster munitions were utilized in the assault. A U.S. official confirmed to Stars and Stripes that the strike caused no significant impact to American facilities at the base and that all U.S. service members remain accounted for. Simultaneously, U.S. personnel stationed in Bahrain were directed to seek shelter early Wednesday following a separate missile threat.

Maritime Escalation in the Strait of Hormuz

The aerial attacks coincided with intensified kinetic clashes at sea. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that military forces destroyed five Iranian crude oil carriers following two separate ballistic missile attacks by the IRGC against an unnamed U.S. Navy warship. The vessel successfully evaded the incoming strikes and continued regional patrols without sustaining damage or injuring American personnel, according to CENTCOM.

The maritime engagements bring the total number of destroyed Iranian tankers to 10 over a single week. CENTCOM stated via social media platform X that the targeted vessels belonged to a multibillion-dollar shadow network funding the IRGC. In response, the IRGC vowed through IRNA to persist in attacking U.S. assets until Washington halts its military operations.

The renewed exchange of strikes follows a resumption of hostilities in late August, triggered when U.S. airstrikes intervened to stop Iranian forces from laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz. Pentagon casualty figures show that 61 additional American service members have been wounded in action since Iran resumed strikes on August 31, bringing total U.S. casualties to 18 killed and more than 800 wounded since the United States and Israel launched strikes against Iran on February 28.
