Ukraine faces mounting pressure from Russian ballistic missiles and jet-powered drones designed to penetrate defensive lines and desmoralize the civilian population by crippling the power grid. In a statement posted on social media, Zelenskyy emphasized that the primary focus of his Canadian visit is protecting Ukrainian skies and preparing for winter resilience. Canada and various European allies are directly supplying hardware while also purchasing American armaments for Kyiv through the Priority Ukraine Requirements List, known as PURL, after the United States halted direct weapon donations under President Donald Trump, as reported by The Associated Press. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, who accompanied the delegation, noted that the diplomatic mission aims to reinforce strategic cooperation and coordinate international aid.

Escalation of Long-Range Drone Warfare

The diplomatic push coincides with an escalation in drone operations from both belligerents. The Russian Ministry of Defence announced that its forces intercepted 448 Ukrainian drones overnight across 13 Russian regions, the annexed Crimean Peninsula, and the Black and Caspian Seas. Ukrainian strikes targeted eight critical infrastructure installations supporting the Russian war effort, including an oil refinery in the Yamalo-Nenets region and a port facility in Dagestan, according to statements from Zelenskyy. Additional debris impacts caused civilian casualties, including a fatal residential fire in the Voronezh region confirmed by local Governor Alexander Gusev, while a Ukrainian maritime drone strike injured 28 people along the seafront in Sochi. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian air force reported incoming barrages of 149 Russian drones, resulting in civilian casualties and structural damage across the Kyiv region and other territories.
