According to comments made on the Pat Bev Show by Patrick Beverley, the 38-year-old point guard questioned the fairness of Simmons securing a roster spot while free agents such as Victor Oladipo, Gabe Vincent, and Cam Thomas remained unsigned. Beverley stated that it is unfair for a player to step away from basketball and then return to an active roster, directing his remarks at the 30-year-old Australian guard.
Beverley currently plays professionally in France following stints across the National Basketball Association, including time with the Los Angeles Clippers.
Ben Simmons Responds to Roster Criticism
According to an Instagram comment responding to a clip of Beverley’s show, Simmons vehemently rejected the notion that he simply stopped playing and received a roster spot as a gift. Simmons wrote that he played for two years without being physically fit and worked aggressively to reach his current physical standing.
“I played two years without being physically fit. That is not a gift. I busted my ass to get into this position,” Simmons wrote on Instagram, adding that he feels deeply grateful to continue playing professional basketball.
Simmons previously earned three All-Star selections as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers before his career was disrupted by injuries and a subsequent trade to the Brooklyn Nets. He also made a brief appearance for the Los Angeles Clippers in 2025.
Sacramento Kings Deal and Injury History
The Sacramento Kings signed Simmons to a one-year, $3.5 million contract following a full season on the sidelines. His last official NBA game action occurred on April 29, 2025, when he logged five minutes off the bench for the Los Angeles Clippers during a playoff game against the Denver Nuggets.
For Sacramento, the agreement represents a low-risk roster addition. Standing 6-foot-10, Simmons provides playmaking ability, transition speed, and defensive versatility across multiple positions. He is expected to provide depth and ballhandling support behind rookie guard Darius Acuff Jr.
