Taylor Rene Parker was sentenced to death after a Bowie County jury convicted her of capital murder for killing 34-week pregnant Reagan Michelle Simmons and cutting her unborn child from her womb, according to court records and district attorney statements. The brutal attack, which also resulted in the death of the infant, placed Parker among the few women on Texas’ death row.
## Trial Verdict and Sentencing Details
A Bowie County jury deliberated for about an hour before finding Parker guilty of capital murder, according to the district attorney’s office. The same jury then weighed whether to sentence Parker to death or to life in prison without the possibility of parole, ultimately handing down the death sentence on a Wednesday, online court records show.
“Based on the strong defense case we put on at sentencing, we are disappointed in the verdict, but we respect the jury’s findings after a long, factually and emotionally difficult trial,” Parker’s attorney, Jeff Harrelson, told reporters following the verdict.
The sentencing trial spanned 25 days and featured testimony from 142 witnesses, according to local reports from CNN affiliate KSLA. Prosecutors argued for the death penalty by telling jurors that Parker would not change, while the defense sought to provide life context, pointing to unaddressed traumatic issues in Parker’s past.
With the sentence, Parker became one of just seven women on Texas’ death row, based on statistics from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
## Investigation and Arrest Timeline
According to a probable cause affidavit, the sequence of events began when Parker told her boyfriend and others that she was pregnant, even going so far as to hold a gender reveal party. On October 9, 2020, Parker told individuals she was traveling to a hospital in Idabel, Oklahoma, to preregister for labor to be induced.
That same morning, police in New Boston, Texas—located west of Texarkana—received a 911 call from a woman reporting that someone had killed her daughter, the affidavit stated. Responding officers discovered Reagan Michelle Simmons dead with a large abdominal wound and her unborn baby missing.
Later that morning, Texas state troopers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle and found Parker holding a baby in her lap. The umbilical cord was connected to the infant and appeared to be emerging from Parker’s pants, creating the appearance that she had given birth, according to the affidavit.
Parker and the infant were transported to a hospital in Idabel, where medical staff determined Parker had not given birth. Investigators stated Parker subsequently admitted to a physical altercation with the victim and to abducting the unborn baby. Authorities determined Parker caused the deaths of both Simmons and the infant due to her inability to provide necessary care to the child.

Family members of the victim expressed relief following the conclusion of the lengthy legal proceedings.
“We are just so thankful justice has been served today, for not only our family, our friends, the prosecution team, our community,” Jessica Brooks, the mother of the victim, told KSLA.
“I’m overwhelmed with happiness it’s over, because [Parker] has been such a burden in our life for so long now that I haven’t been able to think about my sister without thinking about her,” Emily Simmons, the victim’s sister, told the station.
