Michael Saylor’s Strategy Positions Bitcoin as a Global Reserve Asset

Strategy Executive Chairman Michael Saylor released a 21-page Strategy Bitcoin Investor Guide on September 12, positioning the cryptocurrency as an open global reserve asset designed to capture wealth from traditional capital markets. According to the document, which was updated on September 7, Bitcoin’s fixed supply cap of 21 million coins, independent verification, and global transferability support its long-term demand thesis.

The institutional guide targets corporate treasurers, wealth managers, and capital allocators by detailing Bitcoin’s monetary properties, portfolio roles, and structural risks. Rather than relying on aggressive price targets, the publication acknowledges historical market volatility, noting that Bitcoin has previously suffered severe drawdowns between 50% and 90% and can remain below previous peaks for years, according to Strategy dashboard data.

Digital Capital Architecture and Product Exposure

Strategy organizes its thesis around a tiered “digital capital” framework that positions Bitcoin at the base as a reserve asset. Above this foundation, the framework stacks digital equity, digital credit, digital debt, derivatives, and digital money. Each structural layer repackages Bitcoin’s underlying volatility for investors seeking distinct risk-and-return profiles.

Direct ownership of Bitcoin involves distinct self-custody responsibilities regarding private keys and backup recovery. Alternatively, investors can access the asset through corporate treasury shares, preferred stock, debt instruments, and spot Exchange-Traded Products (ETPs). According to Strategy, these financial wrappers shift operational custody to institutional custodians while introducing corporate risk, management fees, and structural legal distinctions.

Market Metrics and Volatility Considerations

Market data cited in the Strategy guide places Bitcoin’s market capitalization near ~$1,60T, with the asset trading approximately 23% above its 200-week moving average as of September 4. The publication monitors key metrics including a network hashrate of 935 EH/s.

Despite the structural scarcity argument, Strategy cautions that market demand ultimately dictates price valuations. Leverage, liquidation risks, and custodial failures can generate significant financial losses even during long-term upward price trends. As of September 7, Strategy itself held 845,050 bitcoin on its balance sheet, aligning its corporate strategy directly with the adoption model outlined in the investor guide.
