The project avoids traditional biopic structures. Instead, it chooses to examine how political persona and public image are meticulously constructed.
Unearthing Retro Archives and Pop Culture
To build this narrative, Rankin combed through material from Library and Archives Canada. He also collaborated with Ed Conroy of Retrontario.
The resulting film blends footage from the 1976 PC leadership convention—where Mulroney lost his initial bid to Joe Clark—with clips from contemporaneous cultural artifacts. These include clips from the campy children’s television show “The Hilarious House of Frightenstein.”
Fred Astaire Elegance Meets Ruthless Ambition
Rankin describes Mulroney’s political maneuvering as smooth and calculated. He compares his public presentation to the elegance of Fred Astaire.
According to Rankin, the former prime minister utilized charm as both a sword and a shield to climb party ranks. He effectively “charming the whole country into oblivion.”
Stopping Short of Polarizing Policies
While the film highlights the baritone-voiced politician’s appeal, it also addresses the harsher realities of political ambition.
Rankin notes that the documentary portrays Mulroney as ruthless and duplicitous at times. This contrasts sharply with the nostalgic remembrance that followed his death in February 2024.
The project deliberately stops short of covering later polarizing policies. These omitted areas include the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax or free trade negotiations with the United States. Instead, it focuses purely on the mythmaking machinery of television that shaped his early career.
