The European Union Aviation Safety Agency ordered urgent inspections of 16 Airbus A380 superjumbos after discovering cracks in critical wing structural components. According to the European Union Aviation Safety Agency, the emergency airworthiness directive targets wing mid-spars on select aircraft operated by Emirates and Qantas, following an analysis of inspection data gathered under previous maintenance requirements.

Emergency Directive and Affected Aircraft

According to the European Union Aviation Safety Agency, the emergency airworthiness directive was issued on June 22 and took effect on June 24. The mandate requires operators to inspect the wing mid-spars—key structural elements located within the wing box—after regulators concluded that earlier cracking could reduce the overall structural integrity of the wing.

The directive applies to 16 specific airframes. Of that total, 15 belong to Emirates, while one belongs to Qantas. Five of the Emirates aircraft must undergo inspections before they are permitted to fly again, though the European Union Aviation Safety Agency permitted limited ferry flights without passengers to reposition those jets for maintenance work. The remaining 11 aircraft must be inspected within 25 flight cycles. Qantas confirmed that its affected aircraft, registered as VH-OQI, was already undergoing heavy maintenance in Dresden, Germany, and that the order would not disrupt its regular flight schedule.

Maintenance Challenges for Aging Superjumbos

The double-deck Airbus A380 entered commercial service in 2007 with Singapore Airlines as the launch operator. Airbus concluded production of the aircraft in 2021 after delivering roughly 250 units, well short of initial projections. Over the years, the type has faced several structural inspection campaigns. In 2012, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency ordered fleet-wide checks after discovering cracks in wing rib feet, which connect the wing skin to internal ribs.

The latest directive focuses specifically on the outer wing section and mid-spars, areas subject to heavy aerodynamic loads during flight. Technicians typically use non-destructive testing methods, such as ultrasonic scanning and eddy-current testing, to examine the wing spar without disassembling major structural components. Operators must report inspection results to Airbus within seven days, regardless of whether they find discrepancies. Any aircraft showing cracks will require repairs before returning to commercial service.

Global Fleet Impact and Operational Response

While the directive impacts a small fraction of the global fleet—which includes major operators like British Airways, Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa, and Qatar Airways—it highlights the complex engineering requirements facing widebody aircraft in the later stages of their service lives. Emirates, the world’s largest A380 customer, operates more than 100 superjumbos and accounts for nearly half of all deliveries. The airline is currently staggering its maintenance checks to minimize disruption to its extensive long-haul network.

Regulators indicated that further action could follow once engineering teams analyze the results of these initial inspections. For passengers holding tickets on future A380 itineraries, airlines retain the ability to substitute aircraft or adjust schedules if an individual airframe requires unexpected structural repairs.
