Angola and China are deepening their long-standing bilateral ties through a renewed focus on parliamentary diplomacy, economic diversification, and institutional cooperation. Delegations from both nations met in Luanda to align legislative priorities with executive agreements established by their respective heads of state.
Parliamentary Diplomacy and Historical Ties in Luanda
The push for closer legislative coordination gained momentum when Américo Cuononoca, First Vice President of the Angolan National Assembly, met in Luanda with Lin Songtian, Deputy Director of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). The discussions centered on implementing consensus agreements reached between the leaders of both countries and strengthening historical ties.
Speaking to the press after the session, Lin Songtian emphasized the mutual history shared by the two nations. “The two countries have already become true friends and reliable cooperation partners,” Lin said. “We fought together in the past, and today we continue side by side to achieve prosperity.”
The dialogue also addressed the expansion of exchanges across culture, education, and institutional research. Both officials underlined the necessity of encouraging closer collaboration between the parliaments of Angola and China to foster policy dialogue and people-to-people connections.
Economic Diversification and Investment Objectives
Beyond political alignment, the meetings in Luanda addressed trade and development strategies aimed at supporting Angola’s economic goals. China remains one of Angola’s primary trading partners and foreign investors, with existing cooperation spanning infrastructure, energy, agriculture, and technology.
Lin Songtian actively encouraged Chinese enterprises to expand their direct investments in Angola to support the country’s economic diversification agenda, which seeks to reduce reliance on oil. The visiting Chinese delegation highlighted communication institutions and research centers as vital areas for future growth and bilateral collaboration.
This engagement builds upon previous diplomatic exchanges in Luanda, which have included meetings between Chinese Ambassador to Angola Gong Tao and Alcides Sakala, chairman of the 3rd Commission of the National Assembly. These continuous institutional touchpoints ensure that bilateral cooperation remains aligned with Angola’s national development priorities while advancing China’s broader strategic partnerships across the African continent.
