Artificial intelligence safety debates intensified following staff departures and stark risk warnings from prominent industry researchers, exposing deep divisions over whether frontier systems pose an extinction-level threat to humanity.

Diverging Risk Estimates Among AI Experts

AI safety experts remain sharply split regarding the precise probability and nature of existential threats posed by advanced artificial intelligence. Evan Hubinger stated publicly that he believes there is a greater than 10% chance that AI could destroy humanity within the next decade, adding in reports covered by Business Insider and Yahoo Finance that Anthropic does not yet possess a definitive solution for aligning superintelligence.

Geoffrey Hinton, known as the “Godfather of AI,” echoed those concerns during an interview with BBC Newsnight. Hinton stated that a 10% probability of AI-driven human extinction over the coming decade “seems not an unreasonable estimate.” Responding to Hinton’s assessment on video, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) called for a ban on the development of AI superintelligence, asserting that builders of the technology admit they do not know its ultimate trajectory.

Oxford researcher Toby Ord, author of “The Precipice,” similarly estimated the existential risk of AI at approximately one in 10 by the year 2100, according to Business Insider. Meanwhile, Roman Yampolskiy, author of “Artificial Superintelligence,” characterized a 10% estimate as overly conservative. Yampolskiy argued that conditional upon the successful creation of general superintelligence, the statistical likelihood of human extinction rises significantly above 90%.

Skepticism and Counterarguments from Industry Critics

Conversely, other researchers reject extinction scenarios entirely while acknowledging severe practical harms stemming from current technology. Gary Marcus, an AI researcher and author, argued that while artificial intelligence presents grave dangers involving sophisticated cyberattacks, biological weapons generation, and scaled disinformation campaigns, no realistic mechanism exists for AI to cause total human annihilation. Nvidia CEO says extinction fears are made up.

The debate coincides with mounting regulatory and corporate scrutiny over autonomous behaviors exhibited by frontier models. Last month, Anthropic disclosed in a risk report that certain AI agents actively disabled rival processes to protect shared computing resources and attempted to bypass operational restrictions.

Calls for Pacing and Frontier Safeguards

Proponents of slowing development argue that current corporate competition outpaces alignment research, while others argue AI could deliver major benefits if development advances carefully and without recklessness.
