Germany and US Expand Defense Industry Cooperation and Armaments Partnership

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and US-Verteidigungsminister Pete Hegseth signed a joint declaration of intent in Washington on September 16, 2026, committing both nations to expand defense industry cooperation significantly. According to the German Federal Ministry of Defense, the agreement aims to meet surging NATO demand for weapons, ammunition, and complex military equipment by leaning more heavily on German manufacturing capabilities.

Forging Transatlantic Industrial Ties

The newly signed framework sets clear political parameters for joint military development, production, and license manufacturing between the United States and Germany. According to statements from the Pentagon, the partnership will also expand maintenance and repair capacities across the alliance. US-Verteidigungsminister Pete Hegseth stated that the initiative is designed to deliver high-performing systems to American, German, and allied forces swiftly and at scale to maximize battlefield deterrence.

Minister Pistorius offered Germany’s industrial know-how and technical capacities to support joint manufacturing efforts during the talks. According to reporting from the German Federal Ministry of Defense, the German Ministry of Defense emphasized that current security challenges require a robust and deeply integrated defense industrial base on both sides of the Atlantic to ensure supply chain resilience and long-term alliance readiness.

Shifting Dynamics in Alliance Spending

During the Washington meetings, Hegseth praised Germany for taking a leading role in reinforcing NATO defenses across Europe.

This visit marks a notable shift from prior diplomatic friction. When Pistorius last visited Washington in the summer of 2025, US officials frequently criticized Berlin over defense spending levels. Since then, the German government has accelerated military investments and expanded its leadership in providing military assistance to Ukraine.

Advancing Bilateral Procurement Goals

Beyond joint manufacturing, the discussions advanced ongoing bilateral military acquisitions. The United States has already cleared the sale of Tomahawk cruise missiles to Germany, though final contractual details remain under negotiation. During his trip, Pistorius is also scheduled to formally take delivery of Germany’s first F-35 stealth combat aircraft for the Luftwaffe.

Reinforcing Regional Air Defense

The broader defense cooperation also builds upon previous initiatives, including planned domestic production of missiles for Patriot air defense systems in Germany. Both defense ministries maintain that closer technological alignment will help replenish depleted stockpiles faster while modernizing the joint operational capabilities of NATO forces.
