Founder Joseph Ree launched the business with an initial location in Kitsilano before expanding a few years later to the Wall Centre on Helmcken Street. While the original Kitsilano storefront closed years ago, the downtown location at 955 Helmcken St. remained open for the majority of the restaurant’s 30-year history.

Bentendo Prepares to Take Over Helmcken Street Space
The storefront on Helmcken Street will not remain vacant for long. Renovations are already underway to transform the compact restaurant space into a new Japanese eatery called Bentendo, according to Vancouver Is Awesome. The incoming restaurant plans to specialize in Japanese comfort food served inside jubako, which are traditional multi-tiered bento boxes.
While ownership has not yet released a full menu or an official opening date, social media updates from Bentendo indicate the kitchen intends to blend traditional Japanese culinary methods with a distinct local perspective. “BENTENDO is inspired by the flavours and food culture of Japan—and made for Vancouver,” the restaurant stated in a public post cited by Vancouver Is Awesome.
