Larkin Breaks Silence on Trade Request at Little Caesars Arena

Detroit Red Wings forward Dylan Larkin stepped to the podium on Thursday to face the music.

On the opening day of training camp at Little Caesars Arena, Larkin addressed his trade request publicly for the first time. The bombshell news first became public on June 4.

“There’s a lot there, a lot of personal stuff, and I’m not ready to go there yet,” Larkin said. “I understand that there’s answers that fans and people that care about this organization around the world want to know, but I’m really not ready to go there. It’s something that I may never be.”

Rebuilding Locker Room Trust After June Shockwave

Larkin enters the season recovering from an upper-body injury. He stated that he is excited to continue playing in Detroit and work his way back up within the locker room.

Sitting alongside interim general manager Shawn Horcoff at the podium, Larkin noted that his trade request stemmed from issues outside of his relationship with his teammates.

“I would say that was not because of them, and that’s as far as I’ll go on that,” Larkin said. “I’ve tried to give them space to let it sink in. I think addressing it in front of them, being honest with them is all I can really do.”

Front Office Unity and Day-to-Day Diplomacy

Horcoff stated that the franchise has engaged in productive dialogue with the forward. According to the sources, Horcoff noted that the club is taking the situation day by day and appreciates Larkin’s direct communication.

“We’re understanding of where he’s come from and we’re going to take this day by day, going to see where this goes,” Horcoff said. “Appreciative that he was honest with us and we were kind of honest back with him and we’re going to keep that private.”

Reflecting on Yzerman Departure and Olympic Rumors

The upcoming season brings a fresh chapter for the organization following the departure of former general manager Steve Yzerman, who was fired in July.

While Larkin and Yzerman experienced a competitive relationship during their tenure together, Larkin expressed respect for the former GM’s leadership style. He also stated that winning an Olympic gold medal with Team USA did not play a role in his trade request.

“We both do our jobs, and in any organization, competitive people are going to have differences,” Larkin said. “I think that’s what makes him great. And he’s a competitive person and he pushes for success, and I respect that a ton.”

Accepting the Loss of the Captaincy

As a consequence of the trade request, Larkin was stripped of his captaincy. He acknowledged that the decision was discussed with the organization and that he accepts the outcome professionally.

“It was discussed with Shawn and the organization and I understand it,” Larkin said. “I asked for a trade from the Detroit Red Wings as the captain and actions have consequences. I understand why that decision was made. I’m going to be a professional about it.”

Larkin remains prepared to play out the season in Detroit as he focuses on his recovery and earning back the trust of his teammates on the ice.
