The controversy unfolded after Macklemore performed at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where he used his set to voice support for Palestinians, shouting “Free Palestine” and performing his song “Hind’s Hall.” According to NBC News, the rapper accused New England Patriots and Gillette Stadium owner Robert Kraft of organizing a boycott among stadium owners in response. Kraft did not deny the allegation, releasing a statement explaining that the decision was made to ensure a welcoming environment at Gillette Stadium rather than to stifle Palestinian advocacy. Messina Touring Group, the tour’s U.S. promoter, told Rolling Stone that multiple venues stated they would refuse to host concerts featuring Macklemore on the bill, leading to his removal from upcoming dates.
In response to Macklemore’s removal, other supporting acts on Sheeran’s tour withdrew from the lineup. Sheeran subsequently clarified on social media that dropping Macklemore was the promoter’s decision because the rapper’s contract was held by the management company rather than Sheeran himself.
