Cowboys Defense Shows Improvement in Third-Down Efficiency
The Dallas defensive unit showed progress in limiting opponent conversions during the win over Washington. The Cowboys allowed a 50% third-down conversion rate against the Commanders, a decrease from the previous week when they allowed the New York Giants to convert nine of 11 third-down attempts.
Safety Jalen Thompson attributed the improvement to the team finding its flow with a new coaching staff and roster. Rookie third-round pick Jaishawn Barham also made his first career start at inside linebacker, serving as the team’s green-dot communicator during the game.
Jayden Daniels Injury Shifts Game Momentum
Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels remained a threat with his legs in the first half. Daniels rushed for 69 yards on seven attempts before halftime. Outside linebacker Donovan Ezeiruaku noted that the defense needs to “tighten up” its containment of quarterbacks who escape the pocket.
The game’s trajectory shifted on the final play of the first half. While attempting to score from the 1-yard line, Daniels suffered a dislocated left elbow. This injury forced Washington to turn to backup quarterback Marcus Mariota for the second half. Jerry Jones stated that if the Commanders had scored that touchdown before the half, it would have been “a whole different ball game.”
Offensive Surge Supports Defensive Transition
While the defense continues to adjust, the Cowboys’ offense has found a high-scoring rhythm. After starting the season with back-to-back three-and-out drives, the Cowboys have since scored on 10 of their last 13 possessions.
Outside linebacker Von Miller indicated that the offense’s current production provides the defense with a better opportunity. Defensive tackle and captain Quinnen Williams emphasized the importance of accountability within the locker room, stating that the defensive unit is receptive to constructive criticism following their initial loss to the Giants.
