WhatsApp Testing Integration to Share Instagram and Facebook Posts Directly

Meta is testing a feature on WhatsApp that allows users to directly share previously published Facebook and Instagram content, including posts, reels, and stories, into the messaging app. According to technology tracking publication WABetaInfo, which first spotted the functionality in WhatsApp beta versions for iOS and Android, the integration aims to reduce the friction of cross-posting highlights across Meta’s core ecosystem.

How WhatsApp Integrates Facebook and Instagram Media

The upcoming feature operates directly within WhatsApp’s existing media selection tool rather than introducing a separate user interface. When users open the tool used to send photos or videos from a smartphone, the media picker displays Facebook and Instagram accounts alongside standard device folders.

According to WABetaInfo’s findings, selecting either linked platform opens a tile view where users can browse and swipe through their active or archived posts, reels, and stories. Content selected through this menu can be published directly to a user’s WhatsApp status or sent within individual and group conversations. The system places no restrictions on media types, supporting both static images and dynamic video formats.

Account Linking and Privacy Settings

Accessing the cross-platform sharing capability requires manual account integration. Users must link their Facebook and Instagram profiles to WhatsApp through the application settings.

To establish the connection, users navigate to the bottom of the WhatsApp settings menu, open the accounts overview section, and select the linked functions option to add external profiles. Meta mandates this step; accounts that remain unlinked will not populate media items in the sharing menu, preserving user control over cross-platform data visibility.

Broader Context in Meta’s Infrastructure

The WhatsApp media integration remains confined to beta testing environments as developers evaluate platform performance and user feedback ahead of a wider public rollout.
