Suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu’s private KwaZulu-Natal home was raided by law enforcement officials executing a search-and-seizure warrant, resulting in the seizure of electronic devices according to local reports. Officers from the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit carried out the operation on Monday, acting on a warrant granted by the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg.

The raid marks the second time police have targeted Mchunu’s properties during an ongoing investigation into allegations of fraud and defeating the ends of justice. KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that officers executed the warrant at a Cabinet minister’s residence, noting that the inquiry stems from cases opened in 2025 at the Durban Central police station.
“This is part of an ongoing police investigation on cases of defeating the ends of justice and fraud, among other charges,” Netshiunda said. Sithembiso Mshengu, a spokesperson for Mchunu, confirmed the operation and stated that the minister complied with authorities in the presence of his legal representation. “As a law-abiding citizen and in the presence of his attorney, Minister Mchunu handed over the handset in line with the directive of the court,” Mshengu said.
Background on Mchunu’s Suspension and Prior Raids
The search follows an earlier operation conducted in October at Mchunu’s Midrand property, where police also seized communication devices that have not yet been returned. President Cyril Ramaphosa placed Mchunu on special leave in July 2025 following allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who claimed the minister maintained links to criminal syndicates and interfered in high-profile investigations.
In response to the allegations, President Ramaphosa established the Madlanga Commission, chaired by retired Constitutional Court Judge Mbuyiseli Madlanga, to investigate the claims. The president has said that a decision on Mchunu’s future will be made only once the commission releases its final report. Mshengu added that Mchunu plans to address the ongoing developments publicly in the coming weeks.
