Shawmut secured the top spot as the fastest-growing company in Rhode Island, according to rankings announced during the Providence Business News 2026 Fastest Growing & Innovative Companies program. The recognition highlights a 110% increase in the firm’s Rhode Island revenue between 2023 and 2025, driven by strategic diversification across public education, luxury residential, and industrial sectors.
Strategic Diversification Drives Revenue Growth
The firm’s expansion stems from a calculated shift away from exclusive reliance on private higher education construction. According to Chris Maury, head of Rhode Island operations and preconstruction for Shawmut’s New England region, leadership intentionally moved into new markets including Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) K-12 public schools, select luxury residential builds, and advanced manufacturing and industrial facilities. This broader sectoral footprint enables the employee-owned company to tackle increasingly complex assignments while maintaining strong client retention. Data provided by the firm shows that over 80% of its work originates from repeat clients.
Expanding Footprint in Public K-12 Construction
A primary driver of recent regional development is Shawmut’s entry into the public K-12 market. After years of pursuing municipal and state opportunities to understand district-specific priorities, the firm established a foothold within the RIDE school construction program. Shawmut currently maintains active involvement in 16 active or recently completed RIDE projects spread across seven different school districts. Maury noted that early setbacks provided valuable lessons in community engagement and client alignment, which later facilitated large-scale project wins such as the start of construction for Pawtucket’s new $326 million high school and ribbon-cutting ceremonies for Providence's 195 Park Pavilion.
Talent Development and Community Engagement
Alongside commercial expansion, Shawmut integrates local community engagement directly into its jobsite operations. Project teams routinely host classroom visits, structured jobsite tours, and hands-on learning events for students, faculty, and local organizations. Company leadership views these initiatives as a direct response to the broader construction industry’s skilled-labor shortage. By introducing students early to careers spanning architecture, engineering, and the trades, the firm aims to build a sustainable talent pipeline across Rhode Island while executing its forward-looking regional strategy.
