Major Fire Breaks Out at Catterick Garrison Barracks in North Yorkshire

Flames and smoke rose high into the night sky, visible to residents in nearby Richmond and across the surrounding area. Unverified videos and images shared online captured the intensity of the fire as bystanders watched the emergency response unfold off Hipswell Road.

Emergency Response and Overnight Operations

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service stated that the emergency operation would extend through the darkness. “North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service have multiple appliances in attendance an accommodation block fire,” a service spokesperson said. “An appliance from County Durham and Darlington along with their Aerial Ladder Platform are also in attendance. This incident is expected to be ongoing throughout the night.”

Catterick Garrison, situated near Richmond, stands as the world’s largest British Army garrison. The Ministry of Defence was asked for comment regarding the incident at the military base, while emergency personnel focused their resources on containing the structure fire.

Local Leadership Reaction

Hipswell and Colburn councillor Kevin Foster addressed the local impact of the emergency while speaking to regional media outlets. Serving also as North Yorkshire Council’s Armed Forces Champion, Foster emphasized that immediate priorities centered on protecting personnel and residents at the camp.

“At this stage, details are limited, and I am awaiting further information,” Foster said. “My immediate concern is for the safety and wellbeing of everyone at the camp, including our military personnel, their families and the emergency services responding to the incident. I would like to thank our emergency services for their response and hope that everyone involved is safe.”
