Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin warned the United Nations General Assembly that when the true horrors of the conflict in Gaza are fully revealed, the evidence and testimonies will shame the world. Addressing the assembly during the general debate, Martin stated that the international community has failed Palestine and criticized the peace plan proposed last year for failing to alter realities on the ground.
Gaza Conflict and Two-State Solution Criticism
Martin detailed what he described as deliberate efforts to make the prospect of a two-state solution impossible. Citing public statements from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the future of a Palestinian state alongside the approval of the E1 settlement development in East Jerusalem, the Taoiseach argued that these actions amount to stated intent rather than conspiracy theories.
While most countries have pushed back against illegal and violent settler occupation in the West Bank, Martin noted that violent settlers continue to act with near-total impunity. He characterized the sustained campaign of displacement and destruction faced by Palestinian communities as amounting to ethnic cleansing. In response to mounting international criticism, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu downplayed settler violence, claiming it was the work of a handful of young juvenile delinquents.
Diplomatic Paths for Palestine and Iran
Advocating for a durable resolution, Martin maintained that the only viable solution is for a State of Palestine and a State of Israel to live side-by-side in peace, security, and dignity. Beyond the immediate conflict, the Taoiseach addressed regional stability by calling on the United States and Iran to return to the negotiation table. He emphasized that Iran must never obtain a nuclear weapon and that its destabilizing regional influence must cease.
Martin also defended multilateral institutions, urging the international community not to walk away from bodies like the United Nations and criticizing efforts to undermine the International Criminal Court. He reminded delegates of the historic achievements of the UN in reducing poverty and enhancing security, while cautioning that global commitment to human rights and development is faltering.
Global Crises: Ukraine, Sudan, and UN Missions
The Taoiseach dedicated significant portions of his address to other major international security crises, beginning with Russia’s war in Ukraine. Asserting that Russia could halt its brutal attacks at any time, he noted that Moscow’s actions have triggered direct global impacts, including soaring food and energy costs. He also highlighted the ongoing war in Sudan, paid tribute to the conclusion of the UNIFIL mission in Lebanon, addressed women’s rights in Afghanistan, and expressed deep concerns for the safety of the LGBTQI+ community globally.
Concluding his diplomatic address, Martin formally pitched Ireland to secure a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2027–2029 term, pledging continued Irish commitment to international law and human rights protection.
