Microsoft says pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI on Xbox Series X and S are tracking closely with its overall console market share, pushing back against reports that sales tilt heavily toward Sony’s PlayStation 5.
Xbox Strategy Director Addresses Pre-Order Metrics
Industry reports previously suggested that consumer pre-orders for GTA 6 favored the PlayStation 5 by a wide margin. Responding to those claims, Xbox strategy director Matthew Ball stated that Microsoft is satisfied with the current trajectory of Xbox pre-orders for the game. According to Ball’s internal analysis, the proportion of Xbox pre-orders matches the platform’s installed base and overall share of the console market.

“Tom, we are very pleased with GTA VI pre-orders,” Ball said in a statement. “The title is breaking records for Xbox; we expect further records to be broken through the fall, and our internal analysis shows that our pre-order share matches our console market share.”
Market Share Context and Sony Marketing Partnership
Sony maintains a prominent marketing partnership with Rockstar Games for Grand Theft Auto VI, using the platform to drive hardware adoption. Sony’s promotional campaign includes dedicated PlayStation 5 gameplay showcases, UI customizations, and targeted blog posts highlighting features like the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback and speaker.
While Sony regularly discloses hardware figures—reporting over 95 million PlayStation 5 units sold as of June—Microsoft does not publicly release sales figures for the Xbox Series X and S generation. External industry analysts estimate that PlayStation 5 sales outpace Xbox Series hardware by a ratio of at least 2:1. If that hardware ratio holds true across the consumer base, industry observers note it could naturally influence the raw volume of platform-specific pre-orders for major multiplatform releases like GTA 6.
Microsoft Leadership Changes and Platform Strategy
Alongside hardware sales discussions, recent industry reports from outlets like The Verge have examined broader operational shifts within Xbox. Under the leadership of new chief executive Asha Sharma, the division’s ongoing structural evaluation has fueled speculation regarding potential operational changes, including functioning as a standalone subsidiary. Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S on November 19.
