Bob Chapek memoir alleges Bob Iger worked to undermine his leadership

Former Walt Disney Co. Chief Executive Officer Bob Chapek alleges in his forthcoming memoir, Behind the Castle Walls: My Thirty Years at the Happiest Place on Earth, that Bob Iger orchestrated a relentless three-year campaign to undermine his leadership and force him out of the company. Published by Simon & Schuster’s Gallery Books imprint on September 29, the book details Chapek’s three-decade career at Disney, culminating in his turbulent tenure as CEO from February 2020 until his ouster in November 2022.

The Succession and Tension From Day One

Chapek assumed the CEO role in February 2020 as Iger’s hand-picked successor, taking the helm just as the COVID-19 pandemic forced widespread closures of Disney’s parks, resorts, cruise ships, and production studios. According to Gallery Books’ synopsis, Chapek steered the conglomerate through unprecedented disruptions before his abrupt dismissal less than three years later. In the memoir, Chapek recalls a joint CNBC interview on February 25, 2020, where he and Iger wore matching black suits and white button-downs. Chapek writes that Iger looked visibly angry and uncomfortable during the segment, crossing his arms and signaling an intent to show the public that the two men were distinct. Chapek writes that Iger regretted naming him almost immediately and struggled to step away from the chief executive office.

Clashes Over Legacy and Corporate Culture

The memoir mentions Iger 121 times, recounting a conversation years before the CEO transition where Chapek remarked that “No one is bigger than the company.” According to Chapek, Iger responded, “You know, that may be true of other CEOs, but I like to think that I’m a little different,” adding that Iger appeared to view himself as the modern reincarnation of Walt Disney rather than just another corporate executive. Chapek maintains he did nothing wrong during his tenure and argues that Iger’s reluctance to relinquish operational control created an exceptionally difficult environment for his leadership transition.

The Florida Legislative Dispute and Political Fallout

Chapek also addresses Disney’s public response to Florida’s Parental Rights in Education Act, often referred to as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, which limited classroom discussions on gender identity and sexual orientation for young students. Chapek writes that while the board and he were engaged in internal discussions to lobby the Florida legislature to soften the bill, Iger posted a public statement on social media declaring support for President Biden’s stance against the legislation. Chapek asserts that Iger’s public tweet made legislative negotiations significantly harder and entrenched Governor Ron DeSantis and his allies.

Book Publication and Historical Context

The upcoming release brings fresh attention to one of the most high-profile leadership transitions in modern corporate history. Chapek began his Disney career in 1993 as a marketing director at Buena Vista Home Video, eventually rising to lead consumer products, home entertainment, and the parks division before succeeding Iger. Following Chapek’s departure in November 2022, the Disney board reinstated Iger as CEO. Iger subsequently led the company until March of the following year, when former parks head Josh D’Amaro assumed the position.
