Nine schools operated by the Muslim Association of Canada (MAC) across Ontario, British Columbia, and Quebec are on high alert following a coordinated email threat received during the week of September 25, 2026. Police departments have been informed and are investigating while the schools have activated security protocols.
Threats Received by MAC Schools
According to MAC spokesperson Nabil Sultan, the same anonymous email was sent to schools in Ontario, B.C., and Quebec over a 24-hour period. The email, which was signed by a “Citizen Vigilante” and shared with The Canadian Press, threatens the “slaughter” of Muslims and vows Canada will be “Islam free.”
Sultan noted that while the non-profit organization is used to receiving threatening and Islamophobic emails, this marks the first time its schools have been targeted in such a direct way. In response, MAC has hired paid security to keep students safe.
Police Investigations and Security Response
Local police forces have been notified regarding the messages. In Ontario, the Peel regional police force stated it is aware of a letter “containing hate-motivated threats” against Islamic institutions. The force has increased police patrols overnight near mosques and schools, and its hate crime unit is actively investigating.
Sultan stated that students are feeling “scared and vulnerable” as they walk past security and police officers on their way to class. He also pointed out that the threats have occurred against a backdrop of rising Islamophobia in Canada, referencing Statistics Canada data showing police-reported hate crimes against Muslims rose by over 170 per cent between 2020 and 2024.
