Dr. Idris Evans, a 46-year-old pediatric critical care physician at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, was stabbed to death in his Edgewood, Pennsylvania home early Thursday morning. Police have arrested 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway of Pittsburgh in connection with the attack, which also left the doctor’s wife critically injured while the couple slept.
Early Morning Attack in Edgewood
According to the Allegheny County Police Department, county 9-1-1 received a report of a stabbing in the 100 block of Linden Avenue at 12:31 a.m. on September 25, 2026. First responders discovered Dr. Evans and his wife inside the residence suffering from multiple stab wounds. Dr. Evans was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His wife was admitted in critical condition.
Intruder Enters Bedroom With a Kitchen Knife
Detectives determined through witness interviews and court documents that an intruder allegedly entered the home and attacked the couple in their bedroom with a kitchen knife. Court documents obtained by KDKA indicate the suspect was wearing only underwear and spoke of “being God” during the incident.
During the assault, Dr. Evans’ wife yelled for the couple’s children—ages 8 and 12—to escape the house and run to a neighbor’s home. Investigators noted that Dr. Evans called the attacker by the name “Elijah” during the confrontation.
K-9 Unit Tracks Suspect Behind Nearby Home
“We do not know if there was any pre-existing relationship,” Allegheny County Assistant Superintendent Victor Joseph stated, according to KDKA reporting. “The woman did not know this male. We are trying to determine if the two males knew each other.”
Police described the crime scene as extremely violent, noting broken bedroom furniture and shattered mirrors. A K-9 unit from the Monroeville Police Department searched the surrounding neighborhood and located Hemingway behind a nearby home with cuts on his hand. Hemingway was hospitalized for treatment before being transferred to the Allegheny County Jail.
Facing Multiple Felony Charges
Elijah Hemingway faces multiple felony charges filed by the Allegheny County Police Department, including:
- Criminal homicide
- Aggravated assault
- Burglary
- Criminal trespass
Police stated that a definitive motive for the attack remains under investigation. Authorities are continuing to examine whether Hemingway and Dr. Evans had any prior acquaintance.

Dr. Evans served as the medical director of the Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and held an appointment as an assistant professor of critical care medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
