The Handheld Hardware Question
Grand Theft Auto 6 is slated for release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
Former Grand Theft Auto developer Jeremy Hartvick addressed the technical and commercial hurdles facing alternative platform ports in an interview with YouTuber Kiwi Talkz.
Technical Feasibility Versus Reality
While mobile hardware capabilities continue to advance, Hartvick expressed skepticism about a dedicated mobile port, despite asserting that the underlying technology is technically viable.
“If they really tried, you could play GTA 6 on your phone because that technology is already there and has been proven,” Hartvick said in an interview covered by Dexerto.
Commercial Return on Investment
Bringing a massive open-world title to hardware with vastly different performance profiles requires extensive optimization. Hartvick argued that the commercial return on investment for such porting efforts rarely justifies the engineering cost. This is particularly true when consumers typically purchase the specific console built to run the game.
“I don’t think this even makes sense, because I’m not sure the audience for GTA 6 is as big as the audience for Switch,” Hartvick explained. “If you’re a fan of GTA, you’re probably going to buy the console where GTA will be released.”
Prioritizing a Unified Experience
For Rockstar Games, the priority remains delivering a unified high-end experience rather than diluting performance to fit constrained hardware architectures.
No,” Hartvick added.
The Cloud Streaming Horizon
As rumors regarding a potential PC port persist alongside speculation about future Nintendo hardware compatibility, alternative delivery methods remain a possibility. Hartvick noted that streaming technology could theoretically bridge the gap for non-traditional platforms.
