Macklin Celebrini has been named captain of the San Jose Sharks, becoming the youngest player in franchise history to hold the role at 20 years old. Former captain Joe Thornton presented the jersey at a team meeting on Friday before practice, according to Associated Press reports.
Youngest Captain in Franchise History
Celebrini takes over a vacancy left by Logan Couture, whose career ended due to a chronic groin and pelvic injury. At 20 years old, Celebrini eclipses Patrick Marleau, who was named captain at age 24 in 2004. He also stands as the youngest active captain in the NHL, edging out 21-year-old Chicago Blackhawks captain Connor Bedard.
Sharks general manager Mike Grier addressed the appointment by noting that teams rarely expect an 18-year-old draft pick to lead the franchise by age 20. Head coach Ryan Warsofsky added that teammates naturally gravitate toward Celebrini’s leadership style on and off the ice.
Historical Production and Roster Context
Selected first overall in the 2024 NHL Draft, Celebrini signed a five-year, $94 million extension this summer that runs through the 2031-32 season. Last season, he recorded 45 goals and 70 assists for 115 points, breaking Thornton’s previous franchise record of 114 set during the 2006-07 season. His total trailed only Wayne Gretzky and Sidney Crosby for points by a player before turning 20.

Despite Celebrini’s output—which included leading Canada with five goals to win an Olympic silver medal and captaining Team Canada at the World Cup—the Sharks missed the postseason for the seventh straight year. San Jose improved by 34 points in the standings and added veteran reinforcements like defenseman Darnell Nurse, defenseman Jacob Trouba, and forward Mason Marchment during the offseason to support Celebrini and a young core featuring Michael Misa, Will Smith, Igor Chernyshov, Sam Dickinson, and second-overall draft pick Ivar Stenberg.
