Rockland Artists Join “Fall of Freedom” Nationwide Movement Against Censorship

National Movement Against Censorship Arrives in Rockland

Running from October 2 through October 4, 2026, the second annual Fall of Freedom campaign unites artists, cultural spaces, and communities across the United States to push back against censorship and authoritarian overreach. Across the country, independently organized exhibitions, performances, and public events in galleries, museums, libraries, theaters, and concert halls are highlighting the defense of expression, art, and democracy. According to organizers, the nationwide initiative encourages artists and audiences to build joyful communities of defiant creativity in the face of fascist repression. Visual artist Dread Scott, playwright Lynn Nottage, and novelist Hari Kunzru are among the artists calling for the multi-day resistance events.

Theatrical Resistance at Steel House Amphitheater

In Rockland, Michael Gorman’s theater group is partnering with Wabanaki activists Sandra and Harley Basset to stage “The Greatest Golfer That Ever Lived!” at the waterfront Steel House Amphitheater, located at 639 Main Street. Described as part absurdist parody and part historic indictment, the free performance explores the tensions between ego, greed, and displacement versus a harmonious relationship between people and land.

The outdoor production is the final event for “A Hole For One! — America 250 Reimagined,” a large-scale environmental art installation by The Forty Hour Club that has been on display at the amphitheater. The exhibition is supported by the Maine Arts Commission.
