Huawei Expands HarmonyOS 7 Distribution to Flagship and Mid-Range Devices Starting September 2026

Initial Rollout Wave and Device Compatibility

The phased distribution means software versions and arrival times vary across individual handsets and regions. Devices included in the initial wave do not all receive stable software simultaneously, as portions of the user base remain in beta testing phases. Huawei has structured the deployment to bring updates progressively to both slab and foldable form factors.

Following the first wave, Huawei scheduled beta access for slightly older generations, including the Mate 60 series and the foldable Mate X5 series, with testing slated for October 2026. Additional device tiers will enter the distribution pipeline pending completion of ongoing software testing. Users verify update availability on compatible hardware by going to Settings, selecting System and updates, and choosing Software update.

Visual Redesigns and Performance Enhancements

HarmonyOS 7 succeeds HarmonyOS 6, which debuted in 2025, following its official introduction at the Huawei Developer Conference in China in June 2026. The platform introduces notable aesthetic revisions across the user interface. System buttons, sliders, notification panels, and operating system controls now feature transparent, glass-like visual effects paired with redesigned animations for a more dynamic feel.

Lock screen capabilities have also been updated to process photographs independently, isolating primary subjects onto a separate visual layer distinct from the background. Under the hood, Huawei optimized the Ark Engine to increase system responsiveness and improve power efficiency. The operating system additionally incorporates a revised storage management utility capable of automatically scanning for and clearing unused data space.

Advanced AI Security Features and Celia Assistant

Artificial intelligence serves as a core pillar of HarmonyOS 7, underpinning both security tools and user interaction. The security suite introduces automated AI detection mechanisms designed to flag suspicious QR codes, fraudulent websites, applications disguised as official software, and unknown telephone numbers associated with potential scam operations.

At the same time, Huawei expanded the capabilities of its Celia digital assistant. The assistant now processes natural, conversational phrasing in everyday language to execute complex tasks comprising multiple sequential steps.
