A former Deltona resident is facing multiple criminal charges after allegedly breaking into a Pennsylvania home and killing a Pittsburgh-area pediatrician. Elijah S. Hemingway, 32, stands accused of criminal homicide, aggravated assault, criminal trespass, and burglary following the Sept. 24 incident, according to reporting by USA TODAY.
Attack and Arrest Details in Pittsburgh
Police reports state that Hemingway broke into the residence just after midnight and attacked a sleeping couple with a kitchen knife. Dr. Idris Evans, a pediatrician at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, suffered multiple stab wounds and died after being transported to a nearby hospital. Evans’ wife, who also sustained injuries, woke up during the attack and yelled for her children—aged 8 and 12—to flee to a neighbor’s home. The children remained uninjured during the incident.
According to police accounts cited by USA TODAY, Hemingway demanded car keys from the victim’s wife, which she provided, before fleeing the scene. Responding officers later located Hemingway nearby in his underwear with bleeding cuts on his hands. Investigators found blood splattered throughout the home, an open kitchen window with blood at its base, and a large kitchen knife in the third-story bathroom.
Prior Incidents in Volusia County
Before the Pennsylvania homicide charge, Hemingway had multiple interactions with law enforcement in Volusia County, Florida. In March 2025, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office arrested Hemingway on a domestic battery charge. A charging affidavit stated that his then-girlfriend reported he grabbed her, forced her onto a bed, and punched her in the head and neck while rambling about vampires. She and her son locked themselves in a room to call 911. Records reviewed by the sheriff’s office indicated prior unprosecuted arrests in Pennsylvania for assault and aggravated assault.
While on pretrial release for the domestic battery case, Hemingway was arrested again on April 1, 2025. When deputies attempted to detain him for a mental health evaluation, Hemingway punched, pushed, and kicked law enforcement personnel, according to the charging affidavit.

Hemingway is currently held on the charges filed in connection with the Pittsburgh-area home invasion and fatal stabbing.
