Washington State University football opened the Kirby Moore era facing a grueling early-season gauntlet, culminating in a 34-24 defeat against Arizona on Saturday evening. Playing three Power 4 teams across their first four games, the Cougars fulfilled expectations by securing one win against three losses, leaving Kirby Moore and his staff searching for solutions to mounting offensive turnovers and inconsistency as conference play approaches.
Early-Season Turnovers Stifle Offense
The primary concern for Washington State centers on ball security and decision-making under center. Through three games against FBS competition, the Cougars have produced just three offensive touchdowns while committing six turnovers, contributing to a total of seven lost turnovers on the season.
Quarterback Caden Pinnick completed 24 of 41 passes for 241 yards, one touchdown, and one interception against Arizona. Pinnick’s total turnover count for the fall has climbed to four, driven largely by questionable decision-making rather than exceptional plays by opposing defenders. Kirby Moore emphasized the need for better communication and alignment between the coaching staff and the quarterback moving forward.
“We gotta make sure we have a plan that everyone’s on the same page, going from the half to the third quarter, especially in a tight game like that where our defense is battling, and we gotta find more ways to create explosive plays,” Moore said.
Inconsistency Plagues Second-Half Performances
The Cougars flashed offensive potential during their opening drive against Arizona, putting together an 11-play, 71-yard scoring series capped by an 11-yard touchdown run from Pinnick. However, the offense failed to sustain that momentum.
During the third quarter alone, the WSU offense managed just three points, 149 total yards, and 44 rushing yards, alongside two three-and-outs, four punts, and three sacks taken. Those struggles allowed Arizona to erase a three-point deficit, take a four-point lead, and secure control of the game with two fourth-quarter scoring drives. Pinnick has now taken 10 sacks across the season.
Looking Ahead to Fresno State and Conference Play
Despite the offensive setbacks, the Cougars retain opportunities to rebound as they shift focus toward the upcoming schedule. WSU hosts Fresno State next weekend, marking the official arrival of conference competition.
“We’re all in this together,” Moore said regarding the team’s ongoing adjustments. “So it starts with me, obviously the offensive staff. Just having that dialogue with him, whether it’s in practice on the headset, reminders, making sure he knows exactly the stipulations.”
