Japan-Canada Energy and Critical Minerals Cooperation: The Future of Economic Security

Canada and Japan are deepening their economic and security ties as geopolitical shifts intensify global competition for secure energy supplies and critical minerals essential for advanced technologies. As import-dependent economies like Japan seek reliable supply chains, resource-rich nations like Canada have emerged as critical strategic partners.

Geoeconomic Pressures Drive Japan-Canada Supply Chain Alignment

Global trade disruptions and rising geopolitical tensions have forced nations to reevaluate industrial vulnerabilities. Japan relies heavily on foreign imports to secure energy resources and critical minerals, making supply chain diversification an absolute economic security priority.

Academic Briefings Focus on Energy and Critical Minerals

To analyze these evolving geoeconomic dynamics, Professor Kazuto Suzuki—a leading expert on economic security from the University of Tokyo—is scheduled to deliver a series of academic briefings in Ontario this October 2026. Suzuki serves as Director of the Institute of Geoeconomics at the International House of Japan and advises multiple governmental bodies, including the National Space Policy Committee of the Cabinet Office.

His presentations will address how Ottawa and Tokyo can strengthen bilateral cooperation across energy sectors, including Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), alongside critical minerals used in battery production. The discussions will examine wider regional security challenges facing both North America and East Asia within an increasingly uncertain international order.

Event Schedule and Academic Hosting Details

The academic events are hosted by prominent Canadian research institutions:

  • Centre for the Study of Global Japan (Toronto): Suzuki will speak on October 13, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM at the boardroom located at 315 Bloor Street West, Toronto.
  • Centre for International Policy Studies (CIPS) and Asian Studies Network (Ottawa): Suzuki will present on October 14, 2026, from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM at room DMS 12102, 55 Laurier Avenue East, Ottawa. The Ottawa session will be chaired by Professor Scott E. Simon of the University of Ottawa, an expert in legal anthropology and Taiwan studies.
