Nearly three years after a severe viral infection forced him away from daily broadcasting, Spanish journalist and television presenter Fernando Díaz de la Guardia is back on the airwaves hosting ‘Andalucía Mediodía’ on Canal Sur.
A Homecoming and Hard-Fought Recovery
The host resumed his presenting duties on September 7, working alongside Silvia Sanz. His return follows a lengthy recovery from severe facial paralysis caused by the varicella-zoster virus, an ordeal that struck him in early 2024.
When the viral infection hit his facial nerve, it left part of his face paralyzed and impacted both his blinking and light sensitivity, forcing him to step away from his presenting role on Cuatro al día alongside Verónica Dulanto. Following months working behind the scenes, he accepted the anchor position at Canal Sur’s ‘Andalucía Mediodía’ in September. The appointment marks a homecoming for the journalist to the regional network where he previously spent a significant portion of his career before moving to national projects.
Direct Confrontation With Physical Sequelae
When announcing his return, Díaz de la Guardia addressed the ongoing physical consequences of his diagnosis directly.
“The sequelae of facial paralysis do not prevent me, but rather motivate me twice as much,” he stated prior to his broadcast debut.
He explained during an appearance on the television program ‘Fiesta’ that his decision to return in front of the camera carries a strong personal objective regarding public visibility.
Challenging Industry Standards On Screen
During his hospital admission, Díaz de la Guardia interacted with fellow patients who felt self-conscious about their altered physical appearances. Those conversations prompted him to use his broadcasting platform to normalize facial differences in media. Patients encouraged him by saying that talking about it on television would help others facing similar realities. Díaz de la Guardia noted that his return challenges long-standing industry assumptions that on-screen presenters must maintain a specific physical perfection.
Broadcasting Beyond Personal Hardships
By appearing on screen without concealing his residual symptoms, the presenter aims to inspire individuals dealing with physical changes or personal insecurities. This advocacy also shaped ‘Imbatibles’, a project through which he has given voice to people facing severe hardships. Reflecting on the physical and emotional hurdles since his diagnosis, the journalist emphasized that medical sequelae do not mark the end of a television career.
