The Georgia Bulldogs crushed the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday 41-13. Georgia’s defense stole the show, helping push the team past the 40-point mark for each game this season.
Kirby Smart stated after the game that his team must improve across all phases, specifically criticizing the performance of the defensive reserves. Despite not being completely pleased, Smart was the calmest he has been after a game this season.
Offensive Struggles and Gunner Stockton’s Efficiency
Georgia’s offense generated 307 total yards in what marked the worst offensive performance for the Dawgs so far this season. The unit received a B- grade, boosted only because Oklahoma features a very good defense that had previously allowed just two touchdowns through three games. Gunner Stockton completed just 56% of his pass attempts and threw his first interception of the season, leading to an immediate red zone touchdown for Oklahoma. The ground game was also inefficient, though a 54-yard touchdown run from Dwight Phillips Jr. in the second half boosted the yards per carry number.
Defensive Dominance and Four Turnovers
Earning an A+ grade, the Georgia defense forced four turnovers and held Oklahoma to just 65 yards on the ground. Chris Cole returned a fumble recovery 85 yards for a touchdown, recovered a second fumble for 23 yards, added a sack, and stated after the game that he practices scooping up fumbles every Monday. Linebacker Raylen Wilson led the team with 11 tackles, added a sack, and forced a fumble. John Mateer looked completely rattled early on against constant pressure from Georgia’s front seven.
Special Teams Excellence
The special teams unit also earned an A+ grade. Punter Drew Miller punted five times for an average of 50 yards, pinning the ball inside the 20-yard line three times. Peyton Woodring knocked in all seven of his kicks, consisting of five extra points and two field goals, with his final extra point marking his 201st consecutive make.
