A former Donegal election candidate, Declan Jordan, has been charged with directing a criminal organization, according to court records. The 33-year-old from Foxes Glen, Milford, appeared before Letterkenny District Court on Monday, facing allegations of orchestrating criminal activities both within and outside the State between an unspecified date in mid-2022 and February 12, 2025, prosecutors stated.

Jordan was arrested on September 27 by three detectives, including Detective Garda Derek Connaughton, who confirmed the arrest occurred at 4:15 p.m. The charges include directing the activities of a criminal organization under Section 71(A) of the Criminal Justice Act, 2006, as amended by the 2009 Criminal Justice (Amendment) Act. He also faces two counts of demanding money with menaces under Section 17 of the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act, 1994, amended by the Intoxicating Liquor Act, 2008.
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has issued directions for the charges, though Garda Sergeant Jim Collins noted the police are awaiting further instructions on the court venue. Bail for the primary charge can only be addressed in the High Court, according to Collins.

Jordan, who did not respond to the charges during his initial appearance, was remanded in custody. His next court date is scheduled for September 29 via video link. Solicitor Mr. Rory O’Brien, who typically represents Jordan, stated he cannot act on criminal legal aid matters due to ongoing withdrawals by solicitors from such cases. O’Brien will only assist in the High Court bail proceedings, the court was told.
