U.S. Representative Sara Jacobs is demanding a formal investigation into living conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln after reports of persistent supply shortages and a mounting mental health crisis among the crew.
Jacobs, a Democrat representing San Diego, visited the aircraft carrier at sea Sunday to meet with sailors and Marines. Following the visit, she characterized the Navy’s responses to her previous inquiries as “wholly insufficient.”
Demands for Inspector General Oversight
The congresswoman has formally requested that the Navy Inspector General launch an inquiry into the operational and living conditions experienced by the crew during their current deployment. Jacobs is not stopping at an internal review; she is pushing the House Armed Services Committee to hold a field hearing in San Diego.
The goal is simple: allow service members to provide direct testimony regarding their experiences. Jacobs highlighted reports of inadequate food and supply levels, mail delays, and a sharp decline in morale. These grievances follow a grueling, record-setting deployment that saw the USS Abraham Lincoln spend 264 consecutive days at sea before a scheduled port visit to Thailand earlier this month.
Eight Suicide Attempts Reported
The push for oversight follows a grim disclosure from Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao. In a letter to Senator Kirsten Gillibrand last week, Cao reported that eight service members from the Lincoln’s battle group attempted suicide during this deployment.
CNN reports that these figures align with the Navy’s broader suicide statistics for the 2024 calendar year. The strain comes after a deployment lasting more than 10 months, involving operations against Iranian forces in the Middle East.
Stretched Supply Lines and Iranian Attacks
Pentagon officials have largely downplayed reports of poor conditions on the ship. However, a report from the Pentagon Inspector General released this month offers a different perspective, acknowledging that regional supply lines have been stretched.
The report specifically cites Iranian attacks on a key U.S. supply hub in Bahrain as a contributing factor to the shortages.
Carrier Rotations in San Diego
The USS Abraham Lincoln is currently in transit toward its home port in San Diego. While the Navy does not disclose specific ship schedules, U.S. Naval Institute News reported Monday that the vessel was positioned near Hawaii.
As the Lincoln returns, the USS Theodore Roosevelt, another San Diego-based carrier, departed port on Sunday. Navy leadership stated earlier this month that while the Roosevelt’s crew should anticipate a lengthy deployment, officials have implemented measures to address the logistics and supply failures that plagued the crew of the Abraham Lincoln.
