Volkswagen Rebrands Electric SUV as ID. Tiguan to Leverage Global Name Recognition
Volkswagen is replacing the ID.4 with the ID. Tiguan, a move that integrates one of the company’s most successful brand names into its electric vehicle lineup. The new SUV is scheduled for an official premiere next month and will enter the market in early 2027, according to the manufacturer.
Strategic Shift to Traditional Model Names
The transition to the ID. Tiguan name is part of a broader naming strategy by Volkswagen to link its electric offerings with established, well-known internal combustion models. The company aims to create a stronger association between new EV technology and the legacy of its most popular vehicles. This shift uses the global strength of the Tiguan brand, which has seen more than 8.3 million units produced to date.
Design Changes and Technical Specifications
The ID. Tiguan will be a completely new electric SUV designed to look more like the current combustion-engine Tiguan. The manufacturer plans a more angular design, featuring a redesigned rear and a new front light strip. Under the hood, the vehicle will utilize the modernized MEB+ platform. Base versions are expected to feature LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery cells and a new entry-level motor.
Production Shifts and Model Consolidation
Manufacturing for the ID. Tiguan will take place at the Emden plant in Germany. This shift in production leads to several changes in the current ID. lineup:
- Production of the ID.4 at the Zwickau plant will be discontinued.
- The ID. Tiguan will absorb the role of the current ID.5.
- A direct successor to the ID.5 will not be produced.

Volkswagen will continue to sell the traditional Tiguan alongside the ID. Tiguan. This allows the company to offer customers a choice between the fully electric ID. Tiguan and the Tiguan powered by internal combustion or hybrid drivetrains.
