White House Clarifies Permitting and Origins
An official familiar with the talks confirmed to The Associated Press that MLB approached the Trump administration to test the feasibility of a national park site.
A White House official clarified that the league drove the inquiry, noting the proposal was not a presidential directive. The National Park Service has not issued any permits for such an event, and the administration did not originate the idea. The league has not authorized official comment on the internal explorations.
Wyoming Lawmakers and Conservationists Push Back
The notion of building a temporary stadium in the Grand Teton area drew swift condemnation.
Wyoming State Senator Mike Gierau, a Democrat representing the Jackson area, called the idea “abhorrent.” Gierau argued that while baseball is a quintessentially American pursuit, the primary purpose of a national park is preserving its scenic and undeveloped values.
Environmental groups joined the chorus. Chris Kassar, the Wyoming director for an environmental organization, warned that the plan undermines public land protections. Kassar stated that building a stadium would involve “bulldozing” lands and destroying the very landscapes millions travel to experience.
Push for Non-Traditional Venues and Global Expansion
The Wyoming exploration fits a broader MLB push to stage special event games outside its 30 standard ballparks.
Recent and planned sites include:
- Field of Dreams (Dyersville, Iowa): Games took place in 2021 and 2022, with an August 2026 matchup set between Boston and Kansas City.
- Rickwood Field (Birmingham, Alabama): The site hosted a regular-season game in 2024.
- Bristol Motor Speedway (Bristol, Tennessee): A game was played at the racing venue in 2025.
- Little League World Series (Williamsport, Pennsylvania): Games have accompanied the tournament since 2017.
Internationally, MLB has taken its brand to London, Mexico City, Monterrey, Seoul, Sydney, Tokyo, and San Juan.
Geography and Hurdles in Jackson Hole
Grand Teton National Park houses a commercial airport that stands as the busiest in Wyoming. The area also features expansive bottomlands in Jackson Hole with flat terrain and dramatic views of the Teton Range.
Despite the physical capacity for a temporary structure, the park’s federal protection remains an immense barrier. No further progress has been reported on the permitting process or formal plans for a game.
