Competing in his first Laver Cup, Jódar defeated Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, to put Team Europe on the board during the opening day of the tournament. Ranked 13th globally, the Madrid native expressed excitement over his performance and the subsequent team success in London. Jódar noted that sharing the week with his teammates provided a distinct contrast to the individual travel typical of the tennis tour.
“This means a lot to me to win this title with these guys,” Jódar said in a post-match press conference. “They helped me from the first day I arrived here. They knew I was the new guy, so they had to explain how this competition works.”

Jódar credited his teammates and captains for easing his transition into the team format. Team Europe was guided by co-captains during the event, offering tactical advice and support during training sessions and matches.
“I think they did a fantastic job to support me during my first match, my debut. It’s always very difficult,” Jódar said. He added that the captains “obviously helped us a lot during this weekend and all this week, first in training, then during the matches. I think they did a fantastic job. I also want to thank them for trusting me and calling me to represent Europe this year.”
The 20-year-old also highlighted the unique atmosphere of the tournament compared to standard ATP events. “What I discovered here on the tour is that for many weeks you travel with your team, but you play for yourself. Here, you play for a team. You get the support of all the other players. So it’s really special to experience a weekend like this on the tour, surrounded by more people within your team.”
