A toddler at a southeast Michigan daycare pulled a loaded pistol from a backpack on Monday, triggering a police investigation and the arrest of a parent who serves as a law enforcement officer in a neighboring jurisdiction. The incident occurred inside a Canton, Michigan, childcare facility, where the child retrieved the weapon from a bag brought into the classroom.
Police Chief Joseph Bialy’s Assessment
Canton Police Chief Joseph Bialy confirmed that no injuries occurred during the event. While the parent in custody works in law enforcement, investigators clarified that the firearm was not a department-issued service weapon.
“I don’t think there was any ill intent by truly anyone involved,” Bialy said during a news briefing. “I think it really falls back on safe security of a firearm, making sure that we know where our firearms are located, that they are not accessible to anyone.”

Chief Bialy reviewed video footage of the incident, describing the moment the child removed the weapon from the backpack as “shocking.” He admitted that the video was difficult to watch, even knowing the eventual safe outcome of the situation.
Staff Intervention and New Security Protocols
An instructor was inside the room when the event unfolded. Staff acted immediately, recognizing the danger and intervening before anyone was harmed. Chief Bialy praised the daycare employees for their rapid response.
Despite existing security measures, administrators are now tightening their rules. The facility announced plans to institute mandatory backpack searches for every child entering the building.
