Hoang Trung Nguyen secured a gold medal at the 2026 Kun Khmer World Championships in Cambodia, overcoming a lack of formal martial arts training and managing a rigorous schedule alongside his high school graduation exams. Representing the sports training and competition center in Dong Nai, Nguyen transitioned from an amateur martial arts enthusiast to a world champion in roughly three years.
Transition from Amateur Training to World Champion
Nguyen’s journey in Kun Khmer began during his sophomore year of high school when coaches identified physical attributes well-suited for the sport, which combines striking power, speed, and ring agility. Prior to his gold medal victory at the 2026 World Championships in Cambodia, Nguyen claimed a gold medal at a national tournament in 2024. According to Dieu Van Sang, head of the boxing and kickboxing department in Dong Nai, Nguyen offset limited physical strength with solid technique and tactical intelligence on the mat, neutralizing opponents rather than relying strictly on brute force. Dieu Van Sang noted that the victory marked the first time the Vietnamese Kun Khmer team secured a world championship title in the discipline.

Balancing Intense Training and Academic Requirements
Throughout his preparation for international competition, Nguyen balanced rigorous national team training sessions, weight-cutting regimens, and academic studies to secure his high school diploma. Training partners such as Tran Tuan Anh, a member of the Dong Nai boxing and kickboxing squad, stated that sparring sessions focused heavily on building strike resistance and technical discipline. Addressing a prior weakness in mastering knee strikes, Nguyen worked closely with coaches to improve flexibility and defensive resilience. Following his graduation, Nguyen enrolled in a physical education teacher training program to pursue coaching and support future generations of athletes.
