Prince William and Kate Middleton visited Headingley Rugby Stadium in Leeds to examine community sports initiatives and honor the enduring legacy of late rugby league player Rob Burrow. Kensington Palace reported that the royal visit aimed to showcase how the Leeds Rhinos club and its foundation use sports to drive health, education, and social inclusion.
Headingley Stadium Visit and Community Impact
During their tour of AMT Headingley Stadium, the Prince and Princess of Wales met with participants enrolled in the Rugby League Development Plan. Kensington Palace stated that the initiative works to increase overall participation, improve player retention, and expand opportunities for women and girls in the sport. Kate, who serves as patron of the Rugby Football League, also extended her good wishes to players preparing for the upcoming Rugby League World Cup.
For the appearance, Kate wore a green blazer paired with her Mappin & Webb “Empress” diamond earrings. She first debuted the earrings at Princess Charlotte’s christening in 2015 and has worn them on more than 30 public occasions, including the 2021 Wimbledon men’s final and a recent visit to the Royal Marsden Hospital.
Honoring Rob Burrow’s Legacy in Leeds
The royal couple spent a significant portion of their visit engaging with the family of former Leeds Rhinos player Rob Burrow, who passed away in June 2024 following a battle with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). William and Kate spoke with Burrow’s widow, Lindsey Burrow, alongside their children Macy, Maya, and Jackson, to discuss the ongoing impact of Burrow’s advocacy on the broader rugby community.
Following Burrow’s death, Prince William shared a personal social media tribute reading, “A legend of Rugby League, Rob Burrow had a huge heart. He taught us, ‘in a world full of adversity, we must dare to dream.’ Catherine and I send our love to Lindsey, Jackson, Maya and Macy. W.”
The visit follows Prince William’s trip to Leeds last year to officially open the Rob Burrow Centre for MND. At that opening, William told Burrow’s children that their father was “an incredibly brave and very special man” who championed a world-leading facility designed to save lives.
