Sony Pictures has set an official July 16, 2027 theatrical release date for Fake Skating, a live-action film adaptation of Lynn Painter’s romance novel. According to Sony Pictures announcements, the studio tapped actors Amélie Hoeferle and Graham Campbell to star as leads Dani and Alec, with Josh Boone directing the project.

Sony Pictures Sets July 2027 Theatrical Release

Sony Pictures scheduled Fake Skating to debut exclusively in theaters on July 16, 2027. Author Lynn Painter confirmed the release date following the studio’s official announcement. The film adapts Painter’s novel, which follows a best-friends-to-lovers narrative centered on childhood companions who reunite during high school.

Amélie Hoeferle and Graham Campbell Lead the Cast

Amélie Hoeferle and Graham Campbell secured the lead roles of Dani and Alec, as revealed by Sony Pictures and author Lynn Painter. Hoeferle’s television credits include Prime Video’s Sterling Point alongside a role in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, while Campbell appeared in The Shards and Late Fame. Painter shared a first-look video on Instagram highlighting the actors’ on-screen chemistry, noting that she watched their chemistry reads prior to casting.

Josh Boone Directs the Adaptation

Director Josh Boone, known for helming The Fault in Our Stars, is directing Fake Skating. Morgan Lehmann and Victoria Bata penned the initial script, with subsequent revisions handled by Boone and his writing partner Knate Lee.

Author Lynn Painter Balances Multiple Book Adaptations

The development of Fake Skating runs parallel to ongoing production for Netflix’s film adaptation of Painter’s breakout YA novel, Better Than the Movies. That separate project stars David Iacono and Beatrice Kitsos under the direction of Julia Hart. Reflecting on the dual adaptations, Painter told The Hollywood Reporter that the daily influx of casting announcements and set updates feels surreal after spending fifteen years receiving literary rejection letters.
