Codenames, one of the most successful Czech games of all time with nearly 20 million copies sold globally across nearly 50 language editions, is expanding to Netflix as a cloud-based party game. Developed by Czech Games Edition, the digital version titled Codenames Party targets the streaming service’s library of cloud games designed for couch play via television screens.
How Codenames Secured a Netflix Deal
Netflix approached Czech Games Edition directly to bring the award-winning party game to its platform, according to Ondřej Skácel, marketing manager at the tabletop publisher. Initially, staff at the company suspected the outreach was a hoax before confirming the streaming giant’s interest.
Rather than executing a standard licensing agreement, the partnership developed through direct technical cooperation. Netflix representatives were already familiar with Codenames from its existing mobile adaptation. The two teams agreed to build a custom digital version internally, combining Czech Games Edition’s design experience with Netflix’s engineering infrastructure.

Skácel noted that while the partnership does not transform the company’s financial standing—as physical board game sales remain the primary revenue driver—the collaboration offers unmatched global prestige. Czech Games Edition reported annual revenues of 222 million crowns, and while the Netflix deal provides development fees and recurring royalties, the main advantage lies in reaching millions of non-traditional players.
Cloud Gaming Restrictions for Czech Fans
Despite the Czech origins of the title, local fans will not immediately be able to play Codenames Party on Netflix. The release is currently restricted to markets where Netflix is actively testing its cloud gaming platform.
Petr Murmak, founder and CEO of Czech Games Edition, confirmed that if the cloud gaming service rolls out in the Czech Republic, the company plans to translate the game and make it available locally. The platform allows subscribers to stream games directly without downloads or installations, mirroring how users stream television series and movies.
Expansion Beyond Traditional Board Games
The addition of Codenames aligns with Netflix’s broader strategy to integrate interactive entertainment alongside its film and television catalog. The company is pursuing two primary gaming directions: titles tied to major intellectual properties like Stranger Things, and established party games suited for casual group settings.
Czech Games Edition has a history of major industry recognition, having won the prestigious Spiel des Jahres award for the original tabletop game, an accolade often considered the equivalent of an Oscar for board games. The studio is also developing a tabletop adaptation of the hit video game Kingdom Come: Deliverance in partnership with its creators.
