Czech actor Václav Vydra has offered a candid assessment of his wife Jana Boušková’s ongoing recovery, stating that the actress will likely not return to her former physical and professional form following a severe spinal fracture and subsequent medical complications. The couple, who have been together for 43 years and married since 2006, faced a major health crisis when Boušková broke a lumbar vertebra, triggering a cascade of intensive surgeries and prolonged hospital stays.
Medical Complications and Prolonged Recovery
The health crisis began with a lumbar spine fracture that required immediate surgical intervention. According to statements made by Václav Vydra, complications arose during an acute internal procedure requiring extended anesthesia, which he described as a severe shock to her system that disrupted both memory and motor functions. Boušková spent a total of seven months in hospitals and rehabilitation facilities, including a three-month period where she was entirely unable to stand and had to relearn how to walk. While she returned home in the summer and made a rare public appearance alongside her husband in January, Vydra noted that the recovery process has reached natural biological limits.
Career Departures and Replacement Behind the Microphone
The severity of the medical ordeal forced Boušková to step away from all acting roles in theater and on screen. Crucially, she was also forced to relinquish her long-running role as the voice of the popular cooking show The table is set!, a narration duty she held alongside her husband from the show’s inception. Since February 2025, Vydra’s theater conservatory classmate, actress Jana Paulová, has stepped in to handle the narration duties.
Relationship Dynamics Amid Adversity
Addressing speculation regarding how the prolonged illness has impacted their marriage of nearly two decades, Vydra rejected the notion that the crisis fundamentally altered their bond. In an appearance on the television program Helen Stanku’s cards laid out, he emphasized that their decades-long partnership was already deeply solidified before the accident. Vydra stressed that while he provides the necessary environment and personal support, the core burden of recovery rests entirely on the individual’s inner drive. He praised his wife’s persistent effort to function within her new daily boundaries, even as permanent lifestyle adjustments take hold.
